How to Up Your Parenting Game with Kids’ Podcasts

When we first started listening to kids' podcasts as a family, I thought “This is the greatest parenting hack ever! Guilt-free screen time!” Watching my kids go from screaming banshees in the car to sitting quietly or seeing my anxious 8-year-old fall asleep peacefully to a bedtime story made me a podcast fan for life.

But as time went on, podcasts became one of the most valued ways I connect, educate, and nurture my children. Seriously. Kids podcasts are there for you as a parent in the most clutch moments. Let me give you some examples…

  1. When the world is too big or too heavy to carry: Whether it was Covid 19, the War in Ukraine, global warming, or a loved one’s cancer diagnosis, I was able to find a show or an episode that not only explained each of these situations in a way my children could understand but also started the deep conversations we would then have as parent and child. Sometimes we will search together for episodes and sometimes I clandestinely play one in the car – either way, if you or your child or the world is facing something big, chances are there’s an episode that can help you navigate it.

  2. When you want to teach a valuable lesson: Sometimes kids need to hear something from someone who doesn’t live with them. Truth. Whenever my partner and I notice some less-than-desirable behaviors we need to address or realize we never taught our kids something, we often find a podcast that does it in a much more effective/funnier/enjoyable way.

  3. When your child goes through [fill in the blank]: Insert puberty, anxiety, losing a friend, failing at something, trying something new, etc. There’s a podcast for that! Again, hearing from other people or learning about someone who has gone through the same thing can be life-changing for a child. At the very least, it can help you start a conversation with your child about what they're going through.

  4. When your child’s curiosity surpasses your brain: This is where podcasts really shine. As adults, we have answers to our endless questions instantly through our phones. But for kids, their curiosity and thirst for knowledge often exhaust their reading ability well before their questions are answered. Podcasts, on the other hand, democratize the internet for kids in a way unlike anything else. So when the “why?’s” aren’t stopping, let them loose on KidsPod.

Podcasts have become a go-to resource for me as a parent for all the reasons above and many more (still very much guilt-free screen time). KidsPod makes those moments even easier to make happen with your family. Follow along or download today to find the best podcasts for kids.
